Green Community Celebrated for Solar Leadership
#

July 13, 2009

Newmarket, July 13, 2009 — Bullfrog Power, Enbridge Gas Distribution and EnerWorks Inc. are proud to recognize Rodeo Fine Homes for its solar community located in Newmarket, Ontario. In this new housing development, solar panels are a standard feature on every home, reducing homeowners’ carbon footprint and energy costs by using clean energy from the sun to heat water. Rodeo’s solar community is one of Canada’s greenest new homes communities.

“Solar water and space heating are standard in all our Ecologic homes. They heat domestic hot water for dishes and showers and also heat the homes themselves, reducing the energy use by more than 60 per cent,” notes Vince Naccarato, who co-founded Rodeo Fine Homes with partner Frank Mauro.

All the homes in this development are designed to LEED Platinum standards. The homes’ advanced green features include rainwater collection to flush toilets and irrigate gardens, superior insulation levels, draft-proofing, heat recovery ventilation, high-efficiency appliances and lighting, ultra low flow fixtures, sustainable harvested wood, low VOC finishes and drain water heat recovery. The community, located south of the Magna Community Centre on Mulock Drive between Leslie and Bayview, still has homes available for sale.

“Enbridge Gas Distribution has a long history of helping builders make new homes more energy efficient and we’re pleased to celebrate Rodeo’s success,” said Arunas Pleckaitis, Vice President, Enbridge Gas Distribution. “Offering clean energy solutions to homebuyers demonstrates Rodeo’s and Newmarket’s leadership in moving towards a clean energy economy.”

The energy efficiency of the solar systems in these Rodeo homes will be monitored as part of an ongoing research initiative by the Solar Water Heating Program offered by Bullfrog Power, Enbridge, EnerWorks and the Government of Canada. “Solar water heating is an excellent example of the kinds of initiatives homeowners can take to conserve energy and reduce their environmental footprint,” said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power.

The Solar Water Heating Program uses solar water heating systems manufactured in Ontario by EnerWorks. The systems are Canada’s first solar water heaters to receive all-season CSA certification. Solar water heaters meet a household’s primary demand for hot water, while the existing water heater provides a secondary heating source. The systems provide a clean, cost-effective way to reduce costs while also significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
